What is Self-Realization? 8 steps to self-realization

Self-realization is a unique and complex path of personal development that fills life with meaning and satisfaction. In the modern world, where a person is faced with a variety of choices and opportunities, self-realization plays a key role in finding one’s place in society and achieving personal well-being.

As a coach on self-realization and balance, I claim that each person has their own path to realizing their potential. There are many nuances in this process… For example: if a man has built a successful career, but at the same time, he spent little time with his family, then he may not realize himself as a man and father. Everything is complicated and individual.

If we take the maximum, then self-realization is the process of becoming the best version of yourself, based on deep self-understanding and the desire for constant personal growth. This concept has its roots in philosophy and psychology, emphasizing the importance of self-expression and revealing your potential.

Why is it important to engage in self-realization?

Self-realization directly affects emotional and psychological well-being. People who strive for self-realization feel more satisfied with life and have a higher level of happiness. This process helps everyone find their place in the world, determine their purpose and meaning in life.

Now let’s consider what levels of self-realization there are.

Levels of personal self-realization

If we start from the classical levels of self-realization, they are, in some ways, similar to Maslow’s pyramid.

  1. Primitive-executive (I want) – satisfaction of physiological needs, ensuring safety.
  2. Individual-executive (I can) – self-expression in love, affection.
  3. Realization of roles and norms in society (must) – motivation is the approval of others.
  4. Semantic and value (decision making) – dedication, actions to implement one’s abilities and talents in life.

But, as I wrote above, I do not believe that if a person has realized himself at the fourth level, then he has realized all the previous ones.

The same Abraham Maslow, during his research, identified the key personality traits of successful people that allow them to achieve outstanding results in life:

  1. Excellent distinction between fantasy and reality. Successful people have a unique ability to clearly see the line between dreams and facts.
  2. Self-acceptance. They accept themselves as they are, which creates the basis for inner confidence.
  3. Naturalness and simplicity. Avoiding publicity, successful people prefer authenticity and simplicity in communication.
  4. Responsibility and reasonable decisions. The ability to accept responsibility and make thoughtful decisions is a key aspect of their success.
  5. Self-sufficiency. They have an internal resource and the ability to solve problems on their own.
  6. A philosophical attitude to the blows of fate. When faced with difficulties, successful people maintain a philosophical attitude, which helps them overcome difficulties.
  7. Re-evaluation of goals. They regularly rethink their life goals, striving for constant development.
  8. The ability to be surprised. In any situation, they find elements that surprise and inspire.
  9. Harmony with themselves. Inner balance and a sense of completeness are important aspects of their personality.
  10. Ease of learning. Successful people easily acquire new knowledge and skills.
  11. Friendliness and sense of humor. They have the ability to communicate easily, are friendly and appreciate a sense of humor.
  12. Clear views on life. Their life principles are based on an understanding of good, evil and a general worldview.
  13. Creative and creative approach. They are capable of creativity and innovation in various fields.
  14. Tolerance and firmness in masculinity. Successful people can be tolerant, but when necessary, they show determination and courage.
  15. Loyalty. They are distinguished by loyalty to friends, loved ones, ideals and principles.

There is more and more information… Let’s systematize it. I have collected these puzzles and identified the key stages of self-realization.

8 Steps to Self-Realization: Finding the Best Version of Yourself

  1. Self-understanding.
Developing your unique “self” involves becoming aware of your unique character traits, individual preferences, and characteristics. It involves deeply analyzing your beliefs, experiences, and values, which is the foundation for developing a strong, self-aware personality.

This also includes the stage of defining values and principles. This stage involves identifying key values that guide our actions and decisions. Defining personal principles that we recognize and follow helps create a moral compass for achieving personal integrity.
  2. Setting realistic and inspiring goals.
This means setting specific, achievable goals that inspire us to take action. Realistic goals become a motivating factor that encourages us to constantly improve ourselves.
  3. Personal growth.
Continuously striving for improvement means that we must constantly strive to develop ourselves, both professionally and personally. A self-actualized person is always in the process of self-improvement, striving to fully realize their potential. To stop developing is to stagnate and degrade.

Personal growth involves being open to learning new things and acquiring new skills. This process not only enriches personal experience, but also expands the horizons of possibilities for self-realization, and also helps to maintain activity and development of the brain.
  4. Taking responsibility for your life.
This is an important point where awareness of your own responsibility for your decisions and actions helps to manage your life. You also need to be aware of the impact of your actions on others and society.

It is also important to develop the skills of making balanced decisions and the willingness to accept the consequences of your actions, which contributes to personal maturity.
  5. Self-esteem.
Developing a positive attitude towards yourself means accepting yourself with love and understanding, and perceiving imperfections as part of the natural part of life. By developing a positive attitude, we create the basis for emotional well-being.

Next, you need to take a step towards overcoming complexes and negative beliefs. This step is aimed at overcoming internal barriers created by a negative perception of yourself. Self-esteem grows with the acceptance of your weaknesses and the desire for personal growth.
  6. Openness to the new.
Openness involves actively exploring new ideas, cultures, and perspectives. This allows you to enrich your inner world and expand your perceptions.

Also important is the willingness to learn and change: this aspect emphasizes the willingness to continuously learn and change, which promotes flexibility of thought and adaptation to a rapidly changing world.
  7. Relationships.
Developing healthy and supportive relationships involves striving to build harmonious relationships with others. Healthy relationships support us in our growth and bring joy to everyday life. A self-actualized persons will not create quarrels around themselves, make unreasonable claims, and generate scandals.

Equally important is the ability to show empathy and mutual understanding with others.
  8. Balance in life.
Finding harmony in different areas of life emphasizes the importance of creating a balance between work, personal life, and rest. Harmony in different aspects of life contributes to overall well-being and satisfaction. This involves not only balancing responsibilities, but also consciously managing time to preserve energy and emotional health.

If you have self-actualized (or are in the process, at the top points) – your life can be in balance. Balance in life is impossible if you do not follow the path of self-actualization.

Conclusion

Self-realization is not just a goal, but also a philosophy of life. It encourages each of us to follow our own path to the best version of ourselves, releasing potential and revealing inner possibilities. In this process, each step brings us closer to full self-expression and harmony in life. Self-realization is both a universal and unique path to your happiness.
